I like the fact that the author is not a recent hypnosis graduate nor someone who has gathered thoughts from other hypnotists and put them in book form. Instead, Dr. Scott is a chiropractor with more than 25 years of experience using hypnosis for himself and to help his clients.

The book's title, "The Hypnosis Treatment Option: Proven Solutions for Pain, Insomnia, Stress, Obesity, and Other Common Health Problems", states the author's intention. On this, he clearly delivers, providing his own personal experiences working with clients and references to highly regarded medical and professional journals. Under the collective term "other common health problems", the author covers smoking, fear of public speaking, fear of flying, bedwetting, labor pain, fibromyalgia, teeth grinding, pre- and postsurgical hypnosis, irritable bowel syndrome and many other issues where hypnosis has proven to be effective.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=nlptrainingcanad&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=1938636090&ref=tf_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

I believe the following audiences will benefit from reading this book:

Those who are wondering what hypnosis is or is not and how it can be used. Part I (Chapters 1 - 5) covers: What is hypnosis (the process, how you would feel, how it works), myths and misconceptions, its history (including its use as an anesthesia), finding a good hypnotist and self-hypnosis.

Those who are practicing hypnotherapists or consulting hypnotists. From my experience, there are many well-intentioned hypnotists, who are narrowly trained. That is they are well-trained in what hypnosis is and is not, and how to assist a client to access a relaxed state. However, often they are not trained to sit down with a client and fully explore the patient's presenting issue and underlying factors nor the metaphor that the client is living that holds the issue in place. As a result, they often use pre-written scripts (one suit fits all). Dr. Scott gives many experiences from his own or other practices that illustrate how a session can be customized to address the client's particular issue.

Those who are affected by or have a family member who is affected by any of the mentioned ailments. Parts II and III of this book cover how hypnosis can improve your health by discussing how hypnosis has helped patients with various health conditions.

And in my opinion Chapters/Indigo does not fully support Canadian or local authors. Allow me to give you two examples:

My most recent book, “Win-Win Influence: How to Enhance Your Personal and Business Relationships” (www.win-wininfluence.com)

was published on June 23, 2012. Within a week, it was available for sale on the Internet at all Amazon stores around the world (USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada) and at Barnes and Noble. Today, almost three months later, in addition to the retailers mentioned earlier, it is available for sale at ebay.com, alibris.com, uread.com (India), booktopia.com.au (Australia), fishpond.co.nz (New Zealand) plus many other online retailers, but not at chapters.indigo.ca. This, despite the fact that my book is listed in Library and Archives Canada’s Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) program (CIP enables the cataloguing of books before they are published, and the prompt distribution of this cataloging information to booksellers and libraries. This statement comes from the Library and Archives Canada website).

Chapters/Indigo to their credit does provide shelf space for local authors (for authors in large metropolitan areas, there can be considerable competition to have your books displayed on these shelves). However, if you are lucky enough to have your books on these shelves, your books are not listed as being available in the store’s inventory system even if your book is listed in Chapters/Indigo’s internet database.

As a result, even though your book is prominently displayed on the “local interest” shelves, the vast majority of in store shoppers are not aware of your book and its availability at that store, especially if it is a genre other than “local interest”.

I have found independent bookstores provide much better support for Canadian authors. For example, if they don’t have it on their shelves, they are very helpful in looking up its availability and ordering it for you. In fact, Ottawa based Singing Pebble Books (www.singingpebblebooks.ca/) has copies of my books on their shelves and my books are listed in their online catalogue – something that seems to be too difficult for Chapters/Indigo to accomplish.

This inaction by Chapters/Indigo has a negative impact on both me and Chapters/Indigo. My book sales are affected as the many regular Chapters/Indigo shoppers do not have access to my book while Chapters/Indigo is impacted as I am not able to list them as a supplier of my book in my various promotional activities. Thus I send these potential book buyers to Chapters/Indigo’s competition.

What would I like Chapters/Indigo to do?

At a minimum, I would like Chapters/Indigo to:

Include all books that are listed in the Library and Archives Canada’s CIP program in Chapters/Indigo’s online database within one month of being published.

Include books that are accepted for placement on the Local Authors shelves (only those books with an ISBN) in that store’s searchable inventory database.

I welcome your thoughts either supporting or adding to my views or providing evidence to the contrary.

Roger Ellerton’s book, Win-Win Influence: How to Enhance Your Personal and Business Relationships (with NLP) was recently published by Renewal Technologies Inc. (www.win-wininfluence.com). According to Roger, “This book is not a quick read nor “tip of the month” book. It is for people who are serious about improving their win-win influence skills with others, be it at work or at home.”

Roger draws on his training and experience as a former university professor, federal government executive, certified management consultant and certified NLP trainer to illustrate his work with real life examples and present influence as a four step process that anyone can follow. His book is based on a principle promoted by Zig Zigler, “You can get anything in the world that you want, if you help somebody else get something they want.” The tips and processes draw their elegance and effectiveness from NLP – one of the best, if not the best, models for understanding and improving your communication with others.

According to Roger, you are continually influencing other people whether you are aware of it or not. And would it not be useful to work on having these influence situations turn out better for both of you? One error that people often make, including some seasoned sales professionals, is to present their idea or product in a way that makes sense to themselves; that is how they like to buy into an idea. But we are all different and have different “buying strategies”. You need to present your suggestion in the way that the other person can see the benefits they will gain and in the way they like to process information and to buy.

Patricia Fry (Ojai, California, patriciafry.com) says, “I recommend Roger’s book to anyone who can use assistance in enhancing his or her personal and business relationships. I'm convinced that anyone can learn how to become more successful in social and business situations and this book definitely offers steps in the right direction.”

According to Ronda Degaust (London Ontario, lifepotentialdevelopments.com), an internationally recognized life coach and trainer, “This book offers simple methods for moving from features to benefits, identifying what is important for the other person, establishing rapport, reading nonverbal behaviors and addressing potential objections.”

Win-Win Influence is Roger’s fifth book. Other books include: Live your Dreams Let Reality Catch Up and Parents’ Handbook: NLP and Common Sense Guide to Family Well-Being.

Roger Ellerton helps individuals and organizations to learn, to address challenges at work and at home and to get more of what they desire in life. He has accomplished this as a tenured faculty member at the University of New Brunswick, an executive in the Canadian federal government, a certified management consultant (CMC), coach, trainer, author and international public speaker. Win-Win Influence may be purchased from any online book store or through the website www.win-wininfluence.com.

Sadly, these desires often became faint, or have left me a few days after the event. I did leave my NLP training feeling much the same way, yet very different. I left not only with excitement about the future, but also with a new sense of confidence and solidity within myself. This grounded, integrated feeling within me hasn't left yet, nor will it. It is the foundation that I lean on everyday as I do daily visualizations, put ideas into action and continue to take steps forward to creating the reality that I desire. The fear and doubt that had so encompassed me before the training, is faint and often non-existent. A change really does take place on a neurological level. It is up to me to reinforce what I have learned.

Not only has the NLP strengthened me and given me new energy for myself and my own life, the knowledge and faith I have in the method is present in conversations that I have with other people. Through the process of sharing my experience and understanding of the material and the NLP model, others, too, have become intrigued and want to know more for themselves. Opportunities have arisen purely out of my own excitement and evidence of changed behaviour since taking this training.

I am a better coach, business partner and friend in general because of my ability to listen to myself and to others with a different sense of acuity and sensitivity. The heat and the triggers in conversation feel like bygones, and I am free to really be available and present to those involved. It has become clear to me that facilitating conversations is a strength of mine and this NLP training has definitely taken it up a notch or two.

During the training one of the trainers said, "The barriers disappear when the outcome is truly important to us." This has stuck with me as I re-evaluate what it is I want to do with my life and realize that the motivation comes when there is passion and then the barriers do disappear. I feel freed from limiting beliefs and empowered to really design what outcome I want for my life.

Thank you for the opportunity and the gift of each of the trainers!
Having taken many training courses over the years across Canada and the USA, this training was top notch giving me cool tools and processes to move my life and business in new directions.

If you have ever lost your motivation, as I had by the time I arrived, this program will get your juice back! I was given the opportunity to rediscover my passion, understand how the way I interpret the world impacts those I engage with, and spring clean the inner closets of my mind, setting a platform for success. Under the expert tutelage of John Sweetnam, Dr. Roger Ellerton, and Su Thomas, the senior trainers, and the excellent support of several other coaches, I learned the art and science of communication, and language use, in a new and exciting way.

Landing back in the reality of my professional and personal life, after completing the seven day intensive, I am focused and moving forward with intention, extremely happy to have once and for all dumped my inner critic in a virtual garbage can, along with other limiting beliefs that were keeping me stuck! I am now engaging with clients and colleagues in a whole new way, and in my first week back have shared the gifts of NLP with diverse workshop audiences, as well as attracted three new clients! I reckon that's a pretty good return on investment! I'm not saying it was easy, and who knows what'll happen from now on! One thing I do know is that we are only limited by our imagination! So what can you re-imagine......are you ready for the NLP challenge?
What was this excited and eclectic group of people; coaches, an engineer, a retail manager, high school students and others gathering for? NLP training. What is NLP training you ask? It is an acronym for neuro-linguistic programming, a set of techniques allowing you to reprogram your mind and body. Or as Roger Ellerton, one of the trainers and author of the book Live Your Dreams: Let Reality Catch Up, <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=nlptrainingcanad&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=1412047099&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">says it is a program for making a better life for yourself and others. Roger's description certainly describes my personal experience well.

My conscious mind brought me to the course to learn new tools to help me in my life coaching practice to give my clients a faster and better experience in their quest for a better life. While I did not realize at the time, I believe it was my subconscious mind that drove me to take this training. It knew I badly need life changes; I just simply had not yet learned to communicate effectively with my subconscious mind. The NLP training allowed me to connect with my subconscious which had reams to tell me once I became receptive.

Did NLP help make my life better? Absolutely! Early on in the program my wife said to thank the trainers for "giving back her husband of many years ago" and my kids chimed in with "can you take this course everyday as you are so calm and understanding." When one of my daughter's friends remarked, "wow I wish my dad was so cool and calm and so much fun" I knew something was happening; this was on day three of a seven day program. Contrast this to only a short time before when family, friends and colleagues were constantly urging me to relax and start enjoying life. How did these changes occur so quickly and completely?

The primary difference between NLP and other forms of wellness development methods is that it is not nearly as focused on the past but primarily on creating a now and a future that you desire. It is also based on the premise that people are not broken, that they have arrived where they are on their journey by the choices they have made. This becomes very powerful when coupled with the principle that people have the resources within themselves to alter their lives to the point of creating the life of their dreams.

Over the years I had become overwhelmed by my work, my play, and my relationships or just about anything I did. Overwhelmed was my normal state in life. While usually performing competently and taking leadership in all I did, I just kept adding more and more to my responsibilities. President of this, vice-chair of that and so on. I was running totally on an urgency mentality and nervous energy to get more done with no time to notice the present. No matter what I did I felt the need to do more. An apparent upward spiral was, in reality, a downward spiral; a crash course. Does this sound familiar? Odds are that it does in this world of "more with less" and our need "to be productive". NLP can help with both of these maladies, while at the same time vastly improving our lives.

One of the techniques we learned early on was called anchoring. This is a technique based on classic conditioned response; a trigger brings on an outcome. A positive example of this would be that each time you smell pumpkin pie you have fond memories Thanksgivings past with family and friends. Another example might be "Every time she looks at me that way I get angry." We used NLP methods to create a positive response to a trigger. We established a trigger point, such as a knuckle, to invoke a calm and happy response; simply by touching that knuckle the state occurred. This is a technique I still employ with great success as I prepare to deliver a speech from a place of calmness.

The anchor became an important tool in our learning as calmness is a precursor to good learning. Another technique that worked particularly well for me was one called "swish pattern". I used this one, taking less than five minutes, to stop drinking Sprite light containing aspartame to having a glass of cold water each time I see a can of Sprite or even an ad for one. This was an established habit replace by a beneficial one in less than five minutes; I did this in early July and have not had a sprite since. Imagine how many habits you could change in a short time, such as replacing smoking with good health perhaps?

About day five of the seven day program I developed a mild dis-ease. As the day progressed the mild dis-ease gave way to extreme physiological and psychological stress. The experienced trainers and their aides recognized the signs and assured me that this was a very positive sign and that a major breakthrough that would change my life forever was about to occur. As we went through more exercises the tension continued to build until I reached a point where I said "I don't want to play anymore." I was assured that I was the one guiding the process and I would move forward as and when I was ready; to rest and observe if I wanted. I continued although only participating halfheartedly. When practicing a technique called "time line therapy" my partner Pete made me feel very safe and comfortable. During this exercise I realized my driven, compulsive and overachieving tendencies that lead to my feeling of being chronically overwhelmed were formed during childhood. People I held in esteem often told me that I was inadequate or to lower my expectations. I responding by making sure I accomplished more than any of them and at a higher level than those who told me I couldn't. Armed with this knowledge I am now free to choose what I do. I now choose what I devote my time to based on value to myself and others; I no longer need to prove myself to anyone. I am who I am and that's OK. This has given me an incredible power in creating the life of my dreams. I am no longer overwhelmed. I am "here in the now" with anyone I am interacting rather than planning what I do next. Not only did I get what I wanted for myself, but I got a gift I can share with my family and friends. Am I perfect yet? Not by a long shot, but that is OK too, I am who I am. I do not need to prove anything to anyone nor do I need the approval of others or to prove anything to them. That is my definition of personal freedom. The first line of the Introduction in Roger's book is "How many of us live our lives according to other's expectations?" I am afraid far too many do; I am very happy to be one who no longer does. What's next?

You recall my feeling of dis-ease that I mentioned having on day five. The more I think about this the more I realize that dis-ease is only a hyphen away from disease. My next challenge is to use NLP to achieve levels of health that are even greater than those I enjoyed as a youth.

I discovered things about my life that I had not known at the conscious level. Discovery is interesting, but the real value is that NLP allowed me to quickly learn how to change my life so that I no longer run on auto-pilot. I am the pilot of my life. The subconscious mind that brought me to the course for healing was successful. The conscious mind that brought me to get a tool set to help my clients is also well satisfied. The course was an incredible life changing experience for me and those I come in contact with. Thank you NLP Partners Su Thomas, Roger Ellerton and John Sweetnam; I will be back.
My purpose in writing this book is to briefly illustrate the power of NLP and to encourage you to explore how NLP concepts can make a difference in your life. I begin by showing that NLP is based on solid theoretical footings from respected disciplines such as: psychology, physiology, systems theory and communication. This is followed by six typical NLP processes that anyone – parents, coaches, those in the helping professions, etc. – can use to help themselves or their children/clients to be more resourceful in certain situations, be more aware of their actions on others or to undertake interesting and challenging opportunities without being sidetracked by anxiety.

NINE WORDS WOMEN USE

(1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

(2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

(3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in fine.

(4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' . that will bring on a 'whatever').

(8) Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying F-- YOU!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' For the woman's response refer to # 3.

* Send this to the men you know, to warn them about arguments they can avoid if they remember the terminology.

* Send this to all the women you know. They’ll laugh, ‘cause they know it's true!!!
www.renewal.ca
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287356040095163817noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315109379268821207.post-40816665460386371252010-07-20T07:37:00.000-07:002010-07-20T07:37:14.410-07:00Parents’ Day – Fourth Sunday of JulyMay has Mother’s Day, June Father’s Day and did you know there is a Parents’ Day in July – well at least in the United States there is.

In 1994, US President Bill Clinton established the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents’ Day when he signed into law a resolution unanimously adopted by the US Congress. Parents’ Day was created for "recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children."

Unlike Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, the National Parents’ Day Council (US) doesn’t see this day as a time to honor parents, rather “a day when parents honor their children and the God-centered family ideal by rededicating themselves to manifest the highest standard of unconditional true love.” Thus they see it as an opportunity to honor excellent parents, particularly outstanding couples as parental role models.

And perhaps Parents’ Day can and should be much broader than this. First, it’s not just about couples as parents. It’s about anyone who steps in to serve in some capacity as a parent – single parents, grandparents, caregivers or teachers. Second, it’s more than just honoring your children. It’s about assessing your skills and abilities as a parent, noticing opportunities for improvement and taking appropriate action. “Simply put, when you become a parent you are not handed a manual that will answer all your questions or cover all situations. For many, the ‘manual’ you bring to parenting is the one you learned from observing your parents.” <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=nlptrainingcanad&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=1425147909&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">(Parents’ Handbook: NLP and Common Sense Guide for Family Well-Being, Roger Ellerton, PhD, ISBN 978-1-4251-4790-7)
www.renewal.ca
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287356040095163817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315109379268821207.post-92208660554750377432010-07-13T06:02:00.000-07:002010-07-13T06:02:09.568-07:00A Book to Definitely Share with ParentsReview of Parents' Handbook: NLP and Common Sense Guide for Family Well-Being by Joyce M. Roger Ellerton's Parents' Handbook<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=nlptrainingcanad&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=1425147909&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"> is based on the concepts of NLP which is neuro-linguistic programming. "NLP is about how you communicate with yourself, and based on the results of this, how you engage in conversation with others." I appreciated a quote from Mr. Ellerton, since it is something that I share with parents at all of my parenting classes that I facilitate: "Simply put, when you become a parent you are not handed a manual that will answer all your questions or cover all situations. For many, the 'manual' you bring to parenting is the one you learned from observing your parents."

Mr. Ellerton has put together an excellent resource for parents/families to put tools in parent's "toolkits" which are strategies to help all members of the family learn how to get to know themselves and others. With these "tools" people will improve their communication skills and be able to achieve their dreams. I particularly appreciated the chapter about the six primary parenting roles. I feel the strategies shared here help to show parents the many roles and ways to help their children through life: caretaker and guide, coach, teacher, mentor, sponsor, and awakener. I think it is very important to see our roles as parents from different perspectives. I feel it is essential for parents to learn and understand the many different ways their children need guidance throughout life.

Reading this book and practicing the strategies and learning all there is to know about NLP will take time and effort. Parenting, especially GOOD parenting, needs both our time and our effort. It is THE most important job in the whole world, the ONLY one that doesn’t come with any training. This book will definitely be one that I share with parents in the parenting classes that I facilitate. Buying this book and spending the time to work through it is a small investment for a lifetime of better relationships in our families.
www.renewal.ca
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287356040095163817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315109379268821207.post-50721992004295265662010-06-11T07:04:00.000-07:002010-06-11T07:04:07.107-07:00The Ultimate Guide to a Fulfilled FamilyReview of Parents' Handbook: NLP and Common Sense Guide for Family Well-Being by Marcia Freespirit, CEO, JimSam Inc.
Review by Roger Ellerton

This book is a must read for managers who want to create a great place to work for their team and for anyone who is looking for more enjoyment and productivity from their work.

The book is clearly focused on the work environment and what you can do to create work of passion and enjoyment for yourself and your team. Occasionally, there are references to other environments such as family and I suggest that all of the ideas, concepts and tools presented are equally applicable in your family life, indeed wherever you are – you are only limited by your imagination.

As I was reading the book, I often wondered if a title such as “Creating Spirit at Work” might not have been more appropriate as this is the focus of the book. But then this may have driven some potential readers away – assuming the book is about religiosity, which it isn’t.

The book is divided in two parts:

Part I: Understanding Spirit at Work.

Here the author presents real-life examples to describe and provide us with insights as to what is spirit at work and illustrate that it can be achieved in different ways. Some of us may have had fleeting experiences of it, others extended experiences and then there are those people for whom it’s just a way of being. For all of us, it’s something we desire even if we cannot fully describe it.

According to the author, spirit at work is present in people who are passionate about and energized by their work and there are four distinct dimensions: mystical experience, engaging work, sense of community and spiritual connection.

Part II: Fostering Spirit at Work.

This is where the book comes alive for me. Here, the author leads us on a journey, providing tools, stories and exercises along the way, for us to discover and create our own spirit at work. As mentioned earlier, these tools are equally useful at home and in other environments.

The author notes that although spirit at work is influenced by the work environment, it’s really created deep within each of us.

Part II begins with a discussion on appreciating yourself – for some of us, recognizing our own talents and contributions is difficult – and respecting and recognizing the presence and contribution of others.

The next three chapters explain and provide exercises for discovering or enhancing spirit at work, specifically, they deal with: positive thinking, living in the moment, optimism, gratitude, forgiveness, courage, service, kindness, happiness and hopefulness.

The book is full of great ideas and exercises, however if you don’t actually do something, then the book is simply a nice read. Thus the author ends with a clear call to action.

As I said earlier, this book is a must read and it clearly stands on its own. However, as an NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) author and trainer, I was struck by how many of the ideas and concepts are similar to or fully in alignment with those from NLP. For those of you who have studied NLP, the material in this book will enrich your understanding and application of NLP concepts. And an understanding of NLP has the potential of making the material in this book even more useful and effective.
www.renewal.ca
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287356040095163817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1315109379268821207.post-91735358124943565712010-02-26T18:48:00.000-08:002010-04-23T13:59:16.670-07:00Parents Handbook: NLP and Common Sense Guide for Family Well-Being
<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=nlptrainingcanad&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=1425147909&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

To process and store this information, we make pictures in our minds of what we believe we have seen, sounds of what we believe we have heard, etc. In NLP, the different ways that we represent or store information in our mind are called representational systems. There are six in total. Five of which correspond to the senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, gustatory and olfactory; plus auditory digital which is devoid of the senses and focuses on discrete words, facts figures and logic.

We use all of the representational systems and often have a preferred system. For example, when learning something new, some of us may prefer to see it or imagine it performed, others like to hear how to do it, others choose to get a feeling for it, and yet others make sense of it. In general, one system is not better than another and your preferred representational system may change over time. People at the top of their profession typically have the ability to use all of the representational systems and to choose those most appropriate for the situation.

For more information on representational systems, please see the article Modalities and Representational Systems .

Auditory Digital Representational System

The auditory digital system is not related to any of our senses. Instead of saying something “looks good”, “sounds right”, “feels nice”, “tastes good” or “has the smell of success”, a person with a preference for auditory digital may say, “this makes sense”, “is logical” or “the specifications are correct”.

People with an auditory digital preference, will tend to:

Have a need to make sense of the world, to figure things out, to understand.

Talk to themselves and carry on conversations with you in their mind. Often they will say they remember discussing something with you, when you actually did not have the conversation. They did, however, in their mind!

Learn by working things out in their mind.

Not to be spontaneous, as they like to think things through.

Have logic play a key role in the decision process as do facts and figures.

Memorize by steps, procedures, sequences.

Two Questions for You to Consider

Please consider the following two questions. I would appreciate receiving your thoughts.

Is the auditory digital representational system a consequence of our modern society?

When man first walked on this planet, he was highly dependent on his senses for food, shelter and to escape danger. To survive for another day, he was intimately connected with nature. He did not have need for facts and figures to keep track of what little he possessed nor logic to prepare a plan or win an argument.

Gradually man accumulated possessions and it became necessary to keep track, manage and develop these possessions through using facts, figures, planning and logic.

Today modern man sends and receives hundreds of e-mails, text and voicemail messages, with the main focus on the content (facts, figures, logic) of the message. Thus he spends less time using his senses to be aware of what is happening around him or to enjoy the beauty of nature or the creations of artisans.

And then there are those among us who have given up modern technology and its trappings or who have established limits on its use and influence, in order to take advantage of local or national parks or to move to the countryside to get back in touch with nature.

Is auditory digital a default system for safety?

Although I have not done any significant research to verify it, it is my contention that many people who have a preference for auditory digital actually have an unexpressed preference for one or more of the other representational systems. These unexpressed preferences were put aside, buried or discounted during their childhood years due to ridicule, inappropriate behaviour, being chided for their opinions or desires by people in authority or respect.

I have met people who grew up in families where feelings were dismissed, or their dreams or attempts to create objects of beauty were laughed at and ridiculed as a waste of time and money. To avoid or minimize this criticism and ridicule, they retreated into themselves - keeping their thoughts and dreams inside, searching for something that could not easily be criticized, a place where using facts, figures and logic they could figure it out for themselves. People in authority or respect may find fault with a colour choice, how something feels, sounds or tastes or smells; but it is more difficult to find fault with facts and figures built on a logical and reasonable thought process. And if you simply process your thoughts internally and keep your desires to yourself, what is there to defend other than you are not as expressive as others?

As these people who selected auditory digital, as a default safety option, become adults and more aware of who they are and their true potential, there is a desire to decloak and fully express themselves by reaching out and hugging others or through visual art or music or through their own creativity. For some, this is an unfamiliar activity and they are not sure how others will react or indeed how to even go about doing it. So they wait and wait and try to figure it out. NLP is a great vehicle to assist with this self-expression in a safe and respectful manner.

I look forward to seeing your feedback.

Author: Roger Ellerton is a certified NLP trainer, certified management consultant and the founder and managing partner of Renewal Technologies. I was a writer, with my own corporate communications company, and I wanted to learn how to reach people the way Tony could. After my first NLP Practitioner Training with Tad James, I was hooked. I went on to take the Master Practitioner and Trainer’s Training.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

At first I studied NLP to enhance my communication skills, and because I enjoyed the learning. Once I took the Master Practitioner and then the Trainer’s Training I knew I had to share this technology, so I began a small NLP coaching practice. Today I still have my corporate communications business, I coach individuals, and I also use my NLP and Solutions Focus skills as a corporate consultant and team builder.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

When a consultant is called into a company it is usually because management is aware that there are problems. Rarely do we get a call because things are going really well and they want to build upon their strengths to get to the next level. However, like with individuals, although they are noticing what is wrong with their picture, there is a lot more going on that is “right”, and it is a matter of focus, perspective, perception, and the energy created in the resulting paradigm that determines their experience and the level of their success.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

Our workshop will be experiential and fun. This is how I became interested in how people communicate, learn and develop, as well as in creating a motivating and efficient work environment. These interests led me to complete a Masters in Public Administration in 2002, and to become a certified NLP Master Practitioner in 2006.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

Topaz Coaching & Training Inc. offers consulting, training and coaching services. To put it succinctly, NLP gives me an edge to understand client’s internal motivations and preferred mode of communication; it also gives me a battery of tools and exercises that I use. The research paper I wrote towards my coaching studies investigates more in depth what NLP brings to the coaching competencies described by the International Coach Federation; this analysis reveals that NLP has a lot of value to bring to all coaching competencies.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

My presentation is on how to demonstrate value for your services to business clients. Since I have a background in management in a large organization, and I’m also a small business owner, I bring both perspectives to this topic, which many people perceive as being complex… My presentation will simplify this topic for CANLP participants who will learn how to measure the impact of their work by combining case studies and success stories with simple measurements. Large corporate clients need facts and figures to show return on investment, yet people also relate strongly to a good success story. My presentation will make the link between these two aspects of showing value for your services and will help small business owners with their marketing strategy. We will also look at what makes a study reliable and credible, so people will find it easier to chose which studies to cite in support of their work.

For those who would like to learn more about you, do you have a website that they can visit or a way that they can easily contact you?

My web site is currently under development; I can be contacted for information on the services I offer at: topazcoaching@yahoo.ca.

In particular, if there are specific questions people would like to see addressed during my presentation at the CANLP conference, I would love to hear them!

www.renewal.ca
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08287356040095163817noreply@blogger.com0
