Auditory Digital Representational System

The purpose of this article is to provide additional insight into the auditory digital representational system and to spark your thought processes and potentially a discussion.

NLP Representational Systems

We access information through our senses: see (visual), hear (auditory), feel (kinesthetic), taste (gustatory) and smell (olfactory). To process and store this information, we make pictures in our minds of what we believe we have seen, sounds of what we believe we have heard, etc. In NLP, the different ways that we represent or store information in our mind are called representational systems. There are six in total. Five of which correspond to the senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, gustatory and olfactory; plus auditory digital which is devoid of the senses and focuses on discrete words, facts figures and logic.

We use all of the representational systems and often have a preferred system. For example, when learning something new, some of us may prefer to see it or imagine it performed, others like to hear how to do it, others choose to get a feeling for it, and yet others make sense of it. In general, one system is not better than another and your preferred representational system may change over time. People at the top of their profession typically have the ability to use all of the representational systems and to choose those most appropriate for the situation.

For more information on representational systems, please see the article Modalities and Representational Systems .

Auditory Digital Representational System

The auditory digital system is not related to any of our senses. Instead of saying something “looks good”, “sounds right”, “feels nice”, “tastes good” or “has the smell of success”, a person with a preference for auditory digital may say, “this makes sense”, “is logical” or “the specifications are correct”.

People with an auditory digital preference, will tend to:

  • Have a need to make sense of the world, to figure things out, to understand.
  • Talk to themselves and carry on conversations with you in their mind. Often they will say they remember discussing something with you, when you actually did not have the conversation. They did, however, in their mind!
  • Learn by working things out in their mind.
  • Not to be spontaneous, as they like to think things through.
  • Have logic play a key role in the decision process as do facts and figures.
  • Memorize by steps, procedures, sequences.

Two Questions for You to Consider

Please consider the following two questions. I would appreciate receiving your thoughts.

  • Is the auditory digital representational system a consequence of our modern society?

When man first walked on this planet, he was highly dependent on his senses for food, shelter and to escape danger. To survive for another day, he was intimately connected with nature. He did not have need for facts and figures to keep track of what little he possessed nor logic to prepare a plan or win an argument.

Gradually man accumulated possessions and it became necessary to keep track, manage and develop these possessions through using facts, figures, planning and logic.

Today modern man sends and receives hundreds of e-mails, text and voicemail messages, with the main focus on the content (facts, figures, logic) of the message. Thus he spends less time using his senses to be aware of what is happening around him or to enjoy the beauty of nature or the creations of artisans.

And then there are those among us who have given up modern technology and its trappings or who have established limits on its use and influence, in order to take advantage of local or national parks or to move to the countryside to get back in touch with nature.

  • Is auditory digital a default system for safety?

Although I have not done any significant research to verify it, it is my contention that many people who have a preference for auditory digital actually have an unexpressed preference for one or more of the other representational systems. These unexpressed preferences were put aside, buried or discounted during their childhood years due to ridicule, inappropriate behaviour, being chided for their opinions or desires by people in authority or respect.

I have met people who grew up in families where feelings were dismissed, or their dreams or attempts to create objects of beauty were laughed at and ridiculed as a waste of time and money. To avoid or minimize this criticism and ridicule, they retreated into themselves - keeping their thoughts and dreams inside, searching for something that could not easily be criticized, a place where using facts, figures and logic they could figure it out for themselves. People in authority or respect may find fault with a colour choice, how something feels, sounds or tastes or smells; but it is more difficult to find fault with facts and figures built on a logical and reasonable thought process. And if you simply process your thoughts internally and keep your desires to yourself, what is there to defend other than you are not as expressive as others?

As these people who selected auditory digital, as a default safety option, become adults and more aware of who they are and their true potential, there is a desire to decloak and fully express themselves by reaching out and hugging others or through visual art or music or through their own creativity. For some, this is an unfamiliar activity and they are not sure how others will react or indeed how to even go about doing it. So they wait and wait and try to figure it out. NLP is a great vehicle to assist with this self-expression in a safe and respectful manner.

I look forward to seeing your feedback.

Interview with Ariel Garten, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 – 15, www.canlp.ca. Presentation title: What is the Neuro in Neuro Linguistic Programming, anyway

Would you please provide my readers with a brief overview of your background (e.g. when did you first start to study NLP, what level of training have you achieved).

I have a degree in Neuroscience from the University of Toronto and worked in the Playfair Neuroscience unit researching the role of oxyradicals on age-related neurodegenerative diseases. When I began practicing as a psychotherapist, NLP took on a large role in my methodology. I trained with Hugh Comerford in Toronto, and completed my masters with John Sweetnam and Roger Ellerton in Ottawa.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

As a psychotherapist and NLP practitioner who deals with a wide variety of issues, from chronic depression, to Turette's Syndrome, to personal productivity, I use NLP in almost every session. It very effectively enhances the effect of the Gestalt, CBT and expressive arts therapy work I do with my private and corporate clients. I find the Gestalt, CBT and Neuroscience background broaden my palette of resources for understanding ones emotions and effecting change, giving me a unique edge as an NLP practitioner.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

The title is "What is the Neuro in Neuro Linguistic Programming, anyway".
We know that the N in NLP stands for Neuro, but when the technique was developed in the 70's very little of the information scientists know about neuroscience today was available. We will learn how NLP is connected to Neuroscience, and how, from a brain-based level, we may be effecting change when we use its techniques. In today's emerging 'neuroscociety', understanding the world and our actions from the basis of the brain becomes not only topical, but critical.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My private practice and consultancy is based in Toronto, Canada, where I have offices downtown and midtown. I am happy to field questions about NLP or help you effect personal change.

For those who would like to learn more about you, do you have a website that they can visit or a way that they can easily contact you?

I can be found at www.neuroconsulting.net or directly at ariel@neuroconsulting.net and look forward to engaging with you.

Interview with Patricia O'Reilly, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 – 15, www.canlp.ca.

Presentation title: Somatic User Interface

Would you please provide a brief overview of your background (e.g. when did you first start to study NLP, what level of training have you achieved).

I started taking NLP courses in the late 70s and was an NLP trainer by the early 80s. I have trained with most of the original NLPers; been on the board of IALP, NAANLP; served an the Canadian representative to these bodies; and worked actively on CANLP since the late 80s. I've presented at NLP conferences in both Canada and the USA.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

I established Metamorph Us in 1987. We give NLP practitioner and Master trainings and use NLP in coaching and consulting with a current emphasis on Stop Smoking with NLP and hypnosis. Recent client was NRC (National Research Council). We are one of the few NLP Institutes using NLP and Noology.

Please tell us about any NLP articles or books that you have written.

I have created an original pattern called 'Kairos'. It's a way to take the clutter out of making decisions and is availiable as a DVD with handouts in eight languages.

Another original product is a illustrated chart to help parents, care givers and child care workers use somatic movement to help babies reach a state to achieve success, and more easily deal with the unexpected.

Two articles have been published in Suppose, the CANLP magazine. Back issues can be accessed at their web site www.canlp.ca Other articles have appeared in an assortment of publications most of which can be seen at www.metamorphus.com/artcls.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

This newly created NLP pattern explores the effects of shifting perceptual awareness on a problem even as it helps us understand how & where problems inhabit our own personal space.

Learning objectives include:

* utilizing up to 14 spatial positions for change

* understanding of a new new tool for change that is successful with individuals and groups

Interview with Paula Engels, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 – 15

Interview with Paula Engels, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 - 15 .

Presentation title: The "All You Can Eat Buffet" Approach to Creating Success.

Would you please provide a brief overview of your background (e.g. when did you first start to study NLP, what level of training have you achieved).

I first started studying NLP in 1992 after staffing several Firewalk and Date With Destiny Seminars with Tony Robbins. I was a writer, with my own corporate communications company, and I wanted to learn how to reach people the way Tony could. After my first NLP Practitioner Training with Tad James, I was hooked. I went on to take the Master Practitioner and Trainer’s Training.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

At first I studied NLP to enhance my communication skills, and because I enjoyed the learning. Once I took the Master Practitioner and then the Trainer’s Training I knew I had to share this technology, so I began a small NLP coaching practice. Today I still have my corporate communications business, I coach individuals, and I also use my NLP and Solutions Focus skills as a corporate consultant and team builder.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

When a consultant is called into a company it is usually because management is aware that there are problems. Rarely do we get a call because things are going really well and they want to build upon their strengths to get to the next level. However, like with individuals, although they are noticing what is wrong with their picture, there is a lot more going on that is “right”, and it is a matter of focus, perspective, perception, and the energy created in the resulting paradigm that determines their experience and the level of their success.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

Our workshop will be experiential and fun. We will demonstrate how shifting our focus from analyzing the situations that we don’t want, deciding what we do want, and noticing how much is working (and doing more of it) can lead to solutions that support and encourage positive transformation in any system.

Participants will learn several techniques to facilitate moving toward what they want more easily and effectively which they will be able to use on themselves, as well as with individual and group clients.

Presentation title:

How to show value for your services: measuring the impact of NLP based interventions in business

Would you please provide my readers with a brief overview of your background?

My 20 year work experience in science and management gave me the opportunity to give presentations to various audiences as well as to manage teams. This is how I became interested in how people communicate, learn and develop, as well as in creating a motivating and efficient work environment. These interests led me to complete a Masters in Public Administration in 2002, and to become a certified NLP Master Practitioner in 2006.

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

Topaz Coaching & Training Inc. offers consulting, training and coaching services. To put it succinctly, NLP gives me an edge to understand client’s internal motivations and preferred mode of communication; it also gives me a battery of tools and exercises that I use. The research paper I wrote towards my coaching studies investigates more in depth what NLP brings to the coaching competencies described by the International Coach Federation; this analysis reveals that NLP has a lot of value to bring to all coaching competencies.

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

My presentation is on how to demonstrate value for your services to business clients. Since I have a background in management in a large organization, and I’m also a small business owner, I bring both perspectives to this topic, which many people perceive as being complex… My presentation will simplify this topic for CANLP participants who will learn how to measure the impact of their work by combining case studies and success stories with simple measurements. Large corporate clients need facts and figures to show return on investment, yet people also relate strongly to a good success story. My presentation will make the link between these two aspects of showing value for your services and will help small business owners with their marketing strategy. We will also look at what makes a study reliable and credible, so people will find it easier to chose which studies to cite in support of their work.

For those who would like to learn more about you, do you have a website that they can visit or a way that they can easily contact you?

My web site is currently under development; I can be contacted for information on the services I offer at: topazcoaching@yahoo.ca.

In particular, if there are specific questions people would like to see addressed during my presentation at the CANLP conference, I would love to hear them!

Interview with Annie Gohier, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 – 15

Interview with Annie Gohier, speaker at the 2007 CANLP Conference, April 13 – 15, www.canlp.ca. Presentation title: La PNL appliquée aux enfants

Would you please provide my readers with a brief overview of your background (e.g. when did you first start to study NLP, what level of training have you achieved).

What is your current business practice and what role does NLP play?

Please tell us about any NLP articles or books that you have written.

(www.attitudes-cft.com/publications.htm )

Would you please provide a brief summary of your presentation at the CANLP conference and indicate the key points that someone in your audience can expect to learn?

La PNL appliquée aux enfants

Cet atelier se veut un clin d’oeil sur les différentes possibilités qu’offrent la PNL dans l’intervention auprès des enfants.
